What you need

  • NodalDesk installed on that computer and added to your account.
  • On that same computer, Available from startup turned on in Settings. You turn it on once and the system asks for your permission.

On Windows: sign in from the sign-in screen

With «Available from startup» on, NodalDesk starts with the computer, before anyone signs in. This is how a remote restart goes:

  1. From the viewer, restart the computer as you would in front of it: Start menu, Power, Restart.
  2. While it restarts, the viewer tells you the computer is restarting. You do not need to do anything.
  3. When it comes back, you see its sign-in screen. Type your password from the viewer, with the keyboard of your computer, phone or tablet.
  4. Within seconds you are at your desktop, as usual.

If the computer takes longer than usual to come back, press Reconnect in the viewer.

On Linux: the computer goes straight to your desktop

On Linux, NodalDesk works inside your session. For the computer to be available on its own after a restart, turn on these two options in Settings:

  • Available from startup: NodalDesk starts with your session, without you having to open it.
  • Boot straight to the desktop: when it boots, the computer signs into your session on its own, without asking for the password, and is ready for you to control.

Since booting straight to the desktop removes the password at boot, only turn it on for computers you trust, like the one at home or at your office. Today it works on desktops with KDE Plasma; on other desktops, after the restart you will need to sign in on the computer before you can control it.

From anywhere

All of this works the same on your home network or over the internet, from the desktop app or from your phone, and always end-to-end encrypted. For your own computer you do not need any codes: you get in with your account.
